Improvers and Innovators

To practise Realistic Medicine, we must embrace the best international evidence, employ sound clinical judgment and support empowerment by listening to what matters most to patients. We need to make more effective use of knowledge and skills across the multi-professional knowledge base, and foster the conditions to support innovation in care delivery.

To practise Realistic Medicine, we must embrace the best international evidence, employ sound clinical judgment and support empowerment by listening to what matters most to patients. We need to make more effective use of knowledge and skills across the multi-professional knowledge base, and foster the conditions to support innovation in care delivery.

There are a number of initiatives underway that aim to help us become better improvers and innovators. For example:

We have appointed Realistic Medicine Clinical Leads across NHS Scotland  to  help embed Realistic Medicine principles and practice within their boards and regions.

The Clinical Leads will provide leadership and advice to colleagues on the key domains of Realistic Medicine. They will champion Realistic Medicine locally, creating the culture and conditions for it to thrive.

In addition, the NHS Board Realistic Medicine Leads and an additional 120 NHS staff have received value based healthcare training to help them identify and tackle unwarranted variation by focusing on better value care.

The principles of Realistic Medicine are also be incorporated as a core component of lifelong learning in medical education; in undergraduate and specialty training programmes and through continuing professional development.
